I have worked with professionals from a number of different industries who have sought out EMDR or Brainspotting to overcome negative limiting beliefs and imposter syndrome.
Their story goes something like this (this is not recounting any particular client so as to maintain confidentiality): I was at work one month ago giving a big presentation and my boss gave me feedback afterward. Ever since that feedback, I doubt myself. I am at the top of my career and never doubted my abilities before. Something about that interaction just shifted my thinking. I can’t stop thinking I am a failure.
How is it that one day we can be at the top of our game and the next doubting ourself? How is it that a critical piece of feedback, even if deemed constructive by the person providing the feedback, can be like a switch in our brain–making us feel incapable of doing the job we previously did with ease?
Triggers (people, places, smells, sights, sounds) can throw our brain into a tizzy. Using the example above, it is entirely possible that any combination of items that were occurring during the “critical feedback” may have triggered this client. Maybe it was the tone of the person providing the feedback? Maybe it was the setting? Or perhaps, it was the way the person looked at the client while giving the feedback? Or maybe the fact it was the client’s boss (an authority figure) offering feedback was the trigger?
You may be asking, what does this have to do with coming to see Jordan for therapy and what exactly will happen during a session to help this client?
First, he helps clients identify their triggers. Together, we work at understanding the cues the body gives us when triggered. We map out other times the client has experienced similar body sensations while triggered. Then, through EMDR and Brainspotting and psychotherapy, Jordan is able to assist clients in a way that clears out negative beliefs tied to these triggers. In the case example above, we may look at other authority figures that have provided critical feedback over the clients lifetime, desensitize those incidents and, in the process, shift perspective to a more adaptive, positive way of thinking. In effect, EMDR, Brainspotting and talk therapy will help the client look at past, present and future situations through a different pair of lenses. EMDR and Brainspotting does this at a neural level, in the parts of the brain that automatically respond to the identified triggers.
Through a combination of treatment planning and then processing, I help guide clients to a healthier perspective. The result, feeling empowered, less triggered and, in the case above, able to receive feedback from authority figures without self-doubt.
