Stress is often associated with being a bad thing. And, while it is true that stress can lead to anxiety, and is commonly associated with sleepless nights, dark circles under the eyes and nail biting, I don’t think all stress is bad. In fact, stress can sometimes serve as a powerful motivator and catalyst for personal growth. So while living a life of balance is a necessity, especially for therapy for anxiety, differentiating between good and bad stress is critical in my opinion.
Good Stress:
Good stress can motivate us to achieve our goals and meet deadlines. Unlike distress, which is harmful and debilitating, good stress can lead to increased productivity and a sense of accomplishment. It can be experienced in various aspects of life, such as starting a new job, taking on a challenging project, or even participating in competitive sports.
Where I see benefits of good stress are in motivation for change and focus, enhanced performance, increasing resilience and personal growth.
How Do You Harness the Power of Good Stress? Set clear goals.
In the therapy space I introduce clients to SMART goals. This is a way of creating order and direction. Two, develop healthy coping strategies. Managing stress with relaxation techniques goes a long way to navigating challenges. Three, embrace change. Change is inevitable in life and when we embrace change, it allows us to open up to new experiences with a different frame of mind. Finally, try cultivating a positive mindset. This can be very difficult for those seeking therapy for depression in Fort Lauderdale; however, cultivating a positive mindset through gratitude practices, reading positive psychology, or simply putting a positive spin on situations can open you up to seeing that stress doesn’t have to lead to anxiety all the time.
While chronic, overwhelming stress can be detrimental to our well-being, good stress has its rightful place in your life. By embracing challenges, setting realistic goals, and adopting healthy coping mechanisms, you can harness the positive energy of good stress to fuel your personal and, even, professional growth.
When clients come to see me we start to differentiate between good and bad stress. As this happens anxiety starts shifting.
