If you live in Northern Virginia and have been searching for trauma or anxiety relief, you have likely come across the term EMDR. It is one of the most highly researched and recommended therapies for PTSD, anxiety, and distressing life events. But what exactly is it, and how does it work?

As an EMDRIA Certified Therapist and Approved Consultant, I receive a lot of questions from NoVA residents who are curious but unsure if EMDR is right for them. Here are the top questions answered.

1. What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based psychotherapy designed to help your brain heal from the symptoms and emotional distress resulting from disturbing life experiences. Unlike traditional talk therapy, which focuses on discussing your problems, EMDR focuses on changing the way your brain stores traumatic memories.

2. How does EMDR work?

EMDR utilizes Bilateral Stimulation (BLS)โ€”usually in the form of guided eye movements, gentle tapping, or auditory tones. This stimulation engages both hemispheres of your brain, similar to what happens during REM sleep. This process helps your nervous system reprocess “stuck” memories so they no longer cause intense emotional or physical reactions in the present.

3. Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail?

No. One of the greatest benefits of EMDR is that you do not need to recount the details of a painful memory for the therapy to be effective. We focus on the impact the memory has on you today, making it a much gentler approach for people who find talking about their trauma overwhelming. That said, I am a trained psychotherapist and, therefore, should you want to combine more traditional talk therapies with EMDR, I offer this as well.

4. What conditions can EMDR treat?

While EMDR is most famous for treating PTSD, it is highly effective for a range of issues common in our high-stress Northern Virginia environment, including:

  • Severe anxiety and panic attacks
  • Childhood and attachment trauma
  • Burnout and chronic stress
  • Phobias and negative self-beliefs

5. Why should I see an Out-of-Network EMDR Specialist?

Many people searching for therapy assume they must stay in-network, but choosing an out-of-network EMDR specialist offers distinct advantages. Insurance companies often dictate session lengths and require severe clinical diagnoses. By operating out-of-network, I can offer customized session lengths (which is highly beneficial for EMDR processing) and complete privacy for your mental health records.

While you pay upfront, I can either provide a detailed superbill that you can submit to your insurance for out-of-network reimbursement; or, many clients use a program called Thrizer. Investing in an EMDRIA Approved Consultant means you are getting top-tier, highly specialized care that aims to heal the root of the issue, saving you time and money in the long run.
